National Center for Liver Cancer

Dr. Wang Hongyang, female, born in Weihai, Shandong Province in China, professor of Molecular Biology, doctor-in-chief, doctor tutor, is now vice dean of Shanghai Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Institute, director of International Co-operation Laboratoryon Signal Transduction and Department of Comprehensive Treatment II of Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery hospital, Second Military Medical University (SMMU). She graduated from the Medicine Department of Second Military Medical University and in 1989 went abroad to Ulm University of Germany for doctor degree. In 1992, she continued her research as a postdoctor at Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry of Academy of Germany. From 1995, she was promoted as a principal investigator. In 1997, with 2500,000 RMB fund from Germany, she came back to China and established the International Co-operation Laboratory on Signal Transduction in SMMU. Two years later she organized the foundation of clinical comprehensive treatment ward in Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital. Thus a developing research mode has been formed by connecting tightly the domestic and overseas centers, which characterized by cross-linking of basic and clinical medicine. She isolated and identified two novel tyrosine phosphotases and three types of signal regulatory proteins, made a lot of unprecedented findings in identification of key signaling molecules and clarification of the tumor signaling pathways. After coming back, she has made prominent progress in unraveling the signal transduction mechanisms of liver cancer. Her publications, totally over 60, include those in Hepatology, Nature, Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, Cancer Research, Oncogene and Biochemistry. She has cultivated 18 postdoctors, doctors and masters and was awarded “Shanghai Ten Top Distinguished Scientific & Technologic Researchers (2003), “Cheung Kong Scholars” of National Department of Education of China (2000), “Distinguished Scholar of Science & Technology of General Logistics Department of PLA” (2000) and “Outstanding Leading Scientists of Shanghai” (1998). She once anchored and now is anchoring funds including the Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, National High-Tech Research and Development Program of China (“863” Project), Major State Basic Research Development Program of China (“973” Project), and Key Basic Research Program of Shanghai. She has won the “First Prize of Science & Technology of PLA” (1999),“First Prize of Shanghai Medicine Science Award” (2003) and “Second Prize of Shanghai Scientific & Technological Development Award” (2003), all as first applicant. She is now the senior reviewer of “863” Project, Subject Censure of State Council Academic Degree Office and Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, chairman of Shanghai Branch of Sino-German Medicine Association and vice editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Experimental Surgery.
